Fortis Comprehensive Epilepsy Centre (FCEC) at Fortis Malar Hospital, Adyar, Chennai, is one of its kind, world class, state of the art facility for diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy/seizures/seizure disorder in Chennai. This is the only corporate hospital in Tamil Nadu to regularly perform epilepsy surgery (brain surgery to control epileptic seizures) in all age groups (infants, children and adults). Also, it is one of the few centres in India that performs complex epilepsy surgeries in infants and young kids regularly.
Recently, FCEC has performed state of the art stereo-EEGs followed by resective epilepsy surgeries in four patients including two international patients successfully. Stereo-EEGs are performed routinely only in very few centres across our country. Awake craniotomy surgeries (patient is awake during the operation while a part of the brain is being removed and the patient is repeatedly tested to confirm full functional integrity) are performed in select cases when needed.
Ours is the busiest epilepsy monitoring unit in Chennai, doing round the clock long term video-EEG monitoring of seizures. During video-EEG patient is admitted to the hospital and continuous EEG is recorded throughout the day along with simultaneous video-recording. Seizures recorded in the video-EEG is analysed in detail and discussed in our multi-disciplinary team meeting to arrive at a precise localisation of the brain site from which the seizures are originating. In select cases whenever feasible, the seizure focus in is removed safely resulting in complete seizure freedom without any problems.
FCEC team has performed more than 125 complex epilepsy operations in the last few years. Apart from the detailed pre-operative (before surgery) evaluation, during the operation EEG is performed on the surface of the brain (intra-operative EEG) to precisely localize the epileptic focus to accurately remove the seizure causing brain region. Intracranial (invasive, subdural) EEG monitorings are performed whenever necessary in more complex cases where seizure focus cannot be reliably identified using non-invasive tests.
FCEC team is head by the renowned senior neurologist and epileptologist Dr Dinesh Nayak who is well known all over the country for his excellent clinical acumen and exemplary electrophysiology expertise. Team consists of Neurologists, epileptologists, pediatric epileptologist, epilepsy surgeon, senior anaesthetist, critical care physicians, neuro-psychologist, EEG technologists and epilepsy care co-ordinator.
